First object in a series. Synthesizing ancient and future building techniques. The criss-cross brick-lay pattern is frequently seen in traditional cork stools from the cork-growing regions of Portugal.

Expansion-molded cork.
For centuries, cork has been used for domestic objects for sitting on. Often in the most direct and prudent ways. Made for the home, and integrated with trees and forests and the life within. Often in a brick-lain method, simple and honest and light. Today, expansion-molding scraps, bits of bark and branches are fused with heat. As pure as it gets. We can build in new ways that are also old, with material that supports life.

This stool is made from a single block of recycled cork. A special pattern is cut onto all four sides, allowing the seat to rock and pivot and react to body movement. The spine is kept straight and muscles are slightly engaged, reducing fatigue and back strain.

This simple and petite chair is really almost a stool, but with a small back rest. Its diminutive scale allows for a momentary perch to gather one’s thoughts, and fits within detail spaces such as corners, bookending a doorway or mantle.
